Semester 2 • 2011-2012
This semester we begin to learn gas tungsten arc welding equipment, setups, operations and filler metals. The class goes through the different purposes of various tungsten types and shapes. We will demonstrate the proper method of reshaping tungsten, work with and describe the advantages of using different shielding gases. We will explain the effects of alloy oxides on the performance of tungsten and how to correctly set up GTA welding machines.
We will learn about cleaning action, collets, flow meter settings, frequency, inert gas, noble insert gas, post purge, pre purge, spark gap oscillator, and tungsten.
We will also get a knowledge of air cooled and water cooled units, torch angle, filler rod manipulation, tungsten contamination, current settings, different postitions and beads.
We will finish out the N.C.C.E.R. Core Curriculum with basic communication skils and basic employability skills.
We will have a lot of practice time periods so students can share their skills with others. We will also prepare the shop for the SkillsUSA Welding Contest which takes place in April.
We will finish out the semester with semester exams and cleaning up the lab for the summer!
